The Book Promotion of “The Sufi Path of Knowledge”, by William Chittick, Translated by Professor Rešid Hafizović, PhD

On December 9, 2021, Thursday, in the premises of the “Ibn Sina” Science and Research Institute, at 17:00 hrs, the book promotion of “The Sufi Path of Knowledge”, by William Chittick, translated by Professor Rešid Hafizović, PhD, was organised.

At the start, the moderator of the event, Mr Nermin Hodžić, greeted the gathered persons, and he pointed out that this work represents the most important scientific endeavour by Professor Chittick, as Chittick worked on it for nearly 20 years.

The promoter, Sabaheta Gačanin, PhD, provided a brief overview of Sheikh Ibn Arabi’s life and scientific opus, and she provided an overview of the book, pointing out some of the important aspects which will aid the readers in their understanding of the content.

Gačanin, PhD, among other things, also said that Ibn Arabi reached the recognitions, which he mentions in “The Sufi Path of Knowledge” book, not solely by the means of his mind, but through epiphany and intent observation. The she focused on the spiritual reality of He/not-He, through the prism of imagination (khayāl) and dream visions (ruʼyā), mentioning the story of the Prophet and the milk he was given within his own dream vision, whereas the self-same milk symbolises Knowledge.

At the end, Gačanin, PhD, expressed her congratulations to the “Ibn Sina” Institute on this marvellous, publishing endeavour.

The promoter, Mubina Moker, PhD, reflected on the verse from the Qur’an, at the very beginning of the work: “And say: My Lord! Increase me in knowledge”, and Moker pointed out that such a recognition represents the eternal process of man’s earthly life, moreover it even follows us after death because it deals with the inborn and not with the accidental aspect of man’s being. Later on, Moker expressed the idea that it deals with the ‘growth’ and that every readers should formulate an interactive relation with the text on the basis of three prisms: Chittick’s interpretation of Ibn Arabi’s teachings, the sole text by Ibn Arabi, and our own understanding of the given content. Ergo, it is necessary to examine the “The Sufi Path of Knowledge” and not merely to read it, Moker, PhD, also stated.

Afterwards, the moderator, Mr Nermin Hodžić, gave a brief overview of the scientific and translational opus by Professor Hafizović, and he pointed out that he would yearly publish one or two works and many new generations owe him thanks for that.

In his inspirational discussion, Professor Rešid Hafizović, while answering the question: ‘How can I find God?’, stated that we are unable to see the Face of God, however we can notice his presence in “The Book of the World” and in “The Book of the Soul”. The presence is realised in ‘clues’ which God leaves within the content of the microcosmic and macrocosmic ‘book of existence’ and it is impossible to see those traces without the light of God’s quintessence, which God gifted to men, as the crown of His creation, and the aforementioned quintessence is the mind’s enlightenment.

“When one obtains the Light through one’s faith and one’s personal self-realising endeavour, the crown of God’s creation can give themselves up to the search of God behind an endless number of curtains fabricated of light and shadow”, Professor Rešid Hafizović said.

Professor Zuhdija Hasanović, PhD, the Deal of the Faculty of Islamic Studies, was also present at the manifestation, accompanied by several professors, students and admirers of Professor Rešid Hafizović, PhD.
