Osman Softić, MA
American and Islamist Groups
- My speech today deals with the relationship of the biggest world force, the USA, with the Islamist groups which has been lasting for centuries, taking into account that they have one political connotation, and it touches even us in Bosnia and Herzegovina, considering that Bosnia and Herzegovina also endured one crisis and aggression, she had different types of challenges and with particular segments of extremist groups.
- What is interesting and what I would like to point out is that Islam is, as a tradition, alike philosophy, as a worldview and as a political system, opinion on the society and the societal organisation politically speaking, it became concrete and it came the focus of international public with the appearance of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. It was taken seriously, as a potent force, and not just as a tradition, culture, civilisation, philosophy, etc., but as a mechanism, the system which could move the world, to change it and direct it towards a particular goal, to direct it towards changing the society for the better, for something more humane, and in international relations for something more just.
- In that context, the US saw the great strength and potency of Islam and the Islamic movements, and in a particular fear which they felt at the outbreak of the Cold War between the US and the USSR for dominance and world-control, world ideologies, resources, but also for the people in the Third World.
- The Muslim countries, the Arabic world, Iran, countries of Southeast Asia post-WWII they start with the process of decolonisation. The process began in Egypt, and it led to one of the first encounters of the US and Islamic movements. The organisation “Muslim Brotherhood” was founded by Hasan El Bena in 1928, in Cairo which in the beginning was not particularly interesting for the US.
- The American embassy in Cairo in 1944, presents one large, serious report, in the organisation of the “Muslim Brotherhood”. Then, the relations are formed between the US and the largest Muslim, political, and social organisation, which later achieved global relations and spread towards the Islamic world.
