Summary

Cultures during their development, in a large number of cases, reach a stage when the highest values achieved in these cultures become a limiting factor. Certain authorities in society set the achieved values in tradition as exemplary, in the sense that they are unsurpassed, insurmountable, and such an attitude gives rise to traditionalism as a commitment to tradition and as a thwarting of progressiveness. Traditionalism is essentially conservative and static, and is thus determined as a very important factor in the general stagnation of society. Tradition, even in its best achievements, is always a part of individual and collective identity, and as such it should be respected, but not as a non plus ultra, but as an incentive for further development and progress. Tradition should be understood as a series of achieved values that are inspiring for new creativity – just as they were the creators of already realized values. In this way, tradition becomes dynamic and defines us as essentially creative beings and advanced societies. In this context, it is desirable to interpret and recontextualize tradition. In most Muslim societies, the most brilliant and globally important achievements of Oriental-Islamic culture grow into traditionalism that generates conservatism in these societies and thwarts their progress. Therefore, a different approach to tradition is necessary: in addition to it being recognized, it is important to creatively interpret and recontextualize it in order to become an incentive for new steps, for permanent plus ultra. The Muslim world is in dire need of a renaissance, and it is created by fermenting its own traditional values and being relatively open to other advanced, healthy cultures.
