The Students’ Club “Ibn Sina” hosted the presentations of students and experts on the topic: “The frames of realizing human rights in the discourse of humanities; human rights in the context of contemporary Palestine” and a collective iftar

On the 4th April 2024 the Students’ Club “Ibn Sina” hosted a program of presentations by students and experts on the topic of “The frames of realizing human rights in the discourse of humanities; human rights in the context of contemporary Palestine” along with a group iftar which followed after these presentations.

During the program students, members of the Club “Ibn Sina” have had the opportunity to present their topics on human rights from varying viewpoints, and to reflect upon the contemporary Palestinian context within the scope of this term.

Prof. Shahab Yar Khan PhD, a long-standing professor of Shakespearean and reneissance literary studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo, spoke to the students on the matter of human rights and the contemporary context of Palestine from an interdisciplinary and literary position. A large segment of his speech was dedicated to the problematization of suppressing student possibilities. Prof. Khan has pointed out that students should respect their country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that they need to be active and involved with the society through research, art and cultural activities. He emphasized that by preserving rights to a full complete education, all other human rights are protected.

After that, the president of the Students’ club Emin Čamo presented the co-speakers of the panel Sara Delić, student of Turkish language and literature at the Faculty of philosophy, University of Sarajevo, a new Students’ club member, Vedad Kobiljak, a long-standing member of the Students’ club from the department for English language and literature at the Faculty of philosophy, University of Sarajevo.

Sara Delić spoke on the topic of Turkish literatteurs, philosophies and their relationship to human rights. Famous writers such as Ahmet Dževdet Paše, Orhan Pamuk and Mawlana Rumi stood out in this speech. Sara dedicated part of her speech to a review of the function of the sacred and spiritual within the framework of realizing human rights, as well as moral dimensions of realizing human rights.

Thereafter, Vedad Kobiljak joined the panel speaking on human rights and freedom of speech in the context „Dune“ written by Frank Herbert emphasizing how cinematographic transformation of this work is a type of cultural appropriation, by which human freedoms are limited and the rights to a national and religious identity. Vedad Kobiljak emphasized that different arabic terms have been translated and conceived in a wrong way in the Hollywood instance of this work due to misconceptions.

For the ending of the first part of the program, a student of Arabic language and literature at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo, Emin Čamo addressed those present, speaking on the topic of human rights from the perspective of philosophy and comparative literature. During this speech, a parallel view between the Arab world and the Greco-European civilization was presented, with a comparison of the works „Republic“ by Plato and the poetic works of the Arabic world. The speech was ended with the words of Mahmud Derviš, a Palestinian poetc of resistance.

After the student presentations, a view of a short documentary on the current Israeli aggression on Palestine followed. Thereafter, Edis Salihović, a member of the Students’ club „Ibn Sina“, joined the panel with a presentation on the most important information on Palestine in the contemporary context of the Israeli aggression, as well as on the foundational information about the origin of the state of Israel, Lorence of Arabia and many more primary events in the history of zionism that have led to problems that Palestine is facing.

At 19:20 in the backyard of the Science and research Institute „Ibn Sina“, after a successfully organized program on the topic of human rights and the contemporary context of Palestine, the guests joined the collective iftar and in a wholesome atmosphere had the opportunity to hear about the poetry of resistance, as a type of solidarity with the Palestinian people. This poetry was read in Arabic and Bosnian by Emin Čamo and Nedžla Alić.
