Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present a comparative analysis of two prominent female characters from William Shakespeare’s Othello and the Bosnian ballad of Hasanaginica. The paper is based on the theoretical overview of the ballad’s development, through defining of the literary genre, and the arrival of the story into English. Also, the paper presents the comparison of the tragic fates of Desdemona and Hasanagnica as two literary personae who stem from different cultural backdrops, and who are subjugated within a world ruled by men. The paper concludes that Desdemona and Hasanaginica are connected by their respective tragic ends which are caused (in)directly by their husbands.
