Abstract
The authors deal with the personality and teachings of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, one of the most important and controversial classical Muslim scholars. In this context, the question of the “authenticity” of his teaching and the question of the use of reason as an instrument of knowledge in the interpretation of the basic principles of Islamic belief are critically studied. At the end of the text, the basic characteristics of his theology are summarized.
