Summary
This paper treats Ibn Haldun’s standpoint on the science of history. Ibn Haldun, an Andalusian-Tunisian thinker (1332-1406), is one of the most prolific thinkers in history and a founder of modern sociology. In the preface to his paper Ketāb al-‘abar or Events, for the first time, he critically analyzes the history and society. His scientific efforts resulted in redefining the science of history and founding the science of sociology. He made great efforts to overcome an intellectual-philosophical stalemate of the Islamic civilization as well as establish a new tradition in historiography and studying social communities. However, his thoughts did not offer a scientific solution to the aforementioned stalemate and it drew attention of Western thinkers. Despite the fact that he detected the problem in the comprehension of history, Ibn Haldun did not manage to leave a reflective tradition of Muslim societies.
